Conference Report on EAUH 2010 Session

Just saw my conference report on Session S24 at last year’s European Association of Urban History Conference in the Informationen zur modernen Stadtgeschichte.

Conference Report: “European Association for Urban History - 10th International Conference on Urban History, Gent (1.-4.9.2010). Sektion S24: Selling the City: The Public, the Private and the Redevelopment of European City Centres, 1945-1979,” in: Informationen zur modernen Stadtgeschichte, 2010/2, 116-117.

Article on Counter-Planning Completed

The last couple of weeks were a bit “dull” - just been writing every day. But now a new article on counter-planning in the 1960s and 1970s is completed and reads quite well. I have tried to analyze the phenomenon in relation to how planning theory relates to locality - an important issue in my opinion. I hope the referees of the Journal of Planning History will think the same.

My editor sent me a picture of the final design of my book’s cover! Looks great and feels even better: the work of the last 5 years is forming into a final product - more information to come.

Thinking About A Convincing Starting Point

Trying to get a grip on the new article on the importance of the local context for the development of urban planning theories. It’s not easy: I am looking for a balance between sticking to examples too narrowly and generalizing too much. Still have until the end of April to finish this - but then again with all the other business that’s not all that much time.

Book Finished - Definitively

YEAH - my book is off to the publisher! Hopefully they start printing soon - I am anxiously waiting for a box with books to arrive during the next months.

Outlining an Article

Today I am spending most of my time preparing a journal article I want to write over the next couple of weeks. I already got a draft of the introduction, which always guides me through the rest of the text. I have spent a couple of hours looking for some additional literature that might be relevant. And I have outlined the individual chapters to give the article a preliminary structure.

If things go as well as today, outlining an article is the part of the publishing process that I enjoy the most. Hopefully work continues just as smoothly.

PP Special Issue

I am finally holding a paper copy of my Planning Perspectives Special Issue on “Participation and the Modernization Process” in my hands - feels good!

It contains four really great articles:

Stefan Sandmeier
“Modelling plans and planning models: the cybernetic vision of a Swiss
Integral Concept for Transport (1972-1977)”

Kenny Cupers
“The expertise of participation: mass housing and urban planning in
post-war France”

Sebastian Haumann
“Modernism was ‘hollow’: the emergence of participatory planning in
Philadelphia, 1950-70”

Peter Shapely
“Planning, housing and participation in Britain, 1968-76”

Book Chapter on “Stadtindianer”

Finally, after 4 years, or so, my chapter “’Stadtindianer’ and ‘Indiani Metropolitani’” has been copy-edited. The edited volume entitled “Between the Prague Spring and the French May: Opposition and Revolt in Europe, 1960-1980” will hopefully be published by this summer. It was in 2006 that the conference the book is based on took place. It was one of my first conferences and I drew on material from my M.A. thesis, so all this seems very far away for me by now…

Book Chapter on Squatted Buildings and Nuclear Free Zones

The draft of the book chapter on Squatted Buildings and Nuclear Free Zones is complete. Now I am waiting for Susanne, my co-author’s, comments and her part to it and hopefully by the end of February we will have the chapter ready for publication.

Last steps

Finally getting to the more fun parts of the publication business: selecting an image for the cover and providing a draft for the announcement of the book - we are getting there!

Letting go …

Preparing last steps for the publication of my dissertation with Steiner Verlag. Reading over the text at this point in the process is frustrating - there are so many things that I could have written differently - is that normal?

Book Chapter on Squatted Buildings and Nuclear Free Zones

I spent most of the day outlining a book chapter I am writing together with Susanne Schregel. It is based on a paper we gave at a conference in Bremen last May. The contribution to the edited volume will be on both squatted buildings and nuclear free zones. We want to show how locality mattered in these specific protest forms. Deadline for the chapter is the end of February - so it is still plenty of time.
