Article for SGWSG Jahrbuch

Working on a contribution to the 2013 Volume of the Schweizerisches Jahrbuch für Wirtschafts- und Sozialgeschichte. The article is based on a presentation I gave in Bern last May at a conference on “habitation”. The article on citizens’ initiatives’ strategies for low income housing is going to be along the lines of the presentation, with some considerable amendments relating to the prevailing market conditions. This point was stressed in the discussion following the presentation and I am thankful for the suggestions.

AHR Review

Working on a review for the American Historical Review. To my own surprise i have been invited to write a review for AHR - of course, it’s only a review, but it is nonetheless the AHR. Anyway, a manageable workload for these days between Christmas and New Year.

Started Writing

Started to write down and organize some ideas on my surface mining project. there still is a lot work to do in the archives, but after collecting material for two months and presenting the ideas several times over the last weeks, I feel like it is time to take the effort and start writing - even if it is preliminary only.

Publication on “Stadtindianer” out now!

The volume edited by Martin Klimke, Jacco Pekelder and Joachim Scharloth “Between Prague Spring and French May. Opposition and Revolt in Europe, 1960-1980” has arrived in print! It includes my chapter on “Stadtindianer”. The chapter is based on one of the very first papers I presented at a conference back in 2006.

Rebuilding European (and US) Cities

Just went over the very last version of my contribution to Georg Wagner-Kyora’s volume “Rebuilding European Cities. Reconstruction-Policy since 1945”. It’s so funny, because I have written about Philly, which is not really a European city. But I think the US example has much to say about how to interpret how European Cities were reconstructed after WWII. I am excited to get the final product - maybe sometime later this year the book will be published already.

Book Chapter on Cultural Politics

Spent the last two weeks and now completed a chapter for an edited volume on cultural politics in post-war cities. The title of my contribution is: Vom „rechtsfreien Raum“ zum alternativen Prestigeprojekt: Das Kölner „Stollwerck“ 1978-1984. After a slow start, it was really fun putting the ideas together - so now I’m quite happy with the result. Looking forward to the reviews.

Finally found the time to finalize a book chapter on (sub-)cultural politics in Cologne. Hope I will find enough time over Easter to get it done. Still needs a lot of thinking over.

Article on Counter-Planning Completed

The last couple of weeks were a bit “dull” - just been writing every day. But now a new article on counter-planning in the 1960s and 1970s is completed and reads quite well. I have tried to analyze the phenomenon in relation to how planning theory relates to locality - an important issue in my opinion. I hope the referees of the Journal of Planning History will think the same.
